belong的基本含义是“在原来该有的地方”,一般译为“属于”,“与…有关”。可以表示某物属于某人,某物属于某物的一部分; 某人属于某个组织或党派; 某人属于某时期或时代; 也可以表示某物〔人〕与另一物〔人〕有适合或匹配的关系。还可以表示某物〔人〕适于放〔用,住〕在某处等。
belong只能用作不及物动词,不可直接接宾语,常和介词to连用,指(主权方面的)“属于”,也指“是(社团、家族、社会阶层的)一员”。belong后也可跟其他介词或副词,表示“某人或某物在这地方或这场合正合适”。
belong常与表示程度或意志的副词连用。
在美式英语中, belong除接介词to, among , in, on, under或with,表示“应归入… ”,强调关系和归属外,还有“住”的意思。
belong后面还可以接不定式,表示“应该”,这属苏格兰用法。
belong是表示所属关系的词,一般不用于进行体，也不用于被动结构。

If a baby or child belongs to a particular adult, that adult is his or her parent or the person who is looking after him or her.
If a person or thing belongs in a particular place or situation, that is where they should be.
